Vikram on Mallanna

Vikram is back. His current extravagant movie, Mallanna, produced by Kalaipuli S Tanu and directed by Susi Ganeshan, is set for release this July. The movie has already created buzz for its awesome trailers. This big budgeted movie’s songs were out recently. As the movie is gearing up for release, Vikram talks about the movie in our chitchat that took place at Taj Banjara on Monday (May 25, 2009). Here are the excerpts.

About Mallanna..

Mallanna is super-hero film. If you ask me the difference between Aparachitudu and Mallanna, nothing has common but you can say, Aparachitudu as Super actor film where as Mallanna a super hero flick. Mallanna has a strong social message but it is told with lots of glitz, entertainment, peppy music, virgin locales, and great action stunts. The film will make you feel excited. It is targeted to every segment of audiences – women, youth and family audiences. There are no sleaze or double meaning dialogues, so I am sure it appeals to all sections of the public. And it is most extravagant film in my career, highest budgeted flick.

Plot and similarities

The reason I accepted this flick is because of the storyline narrated by Susi Ganeshan. The plot line is the best original thought I ever come across.

Theme

Though the movie deals largely about the economic offences, white collar crimes, and social responsibility, it doesn’t have any thing to do with other movies like Shivaji. The theme is completely new.

Character and James Bond style

I play the role of a CBI Officer who works in the special wing of Economic Offences. The characterization is unique. The character is designed in James Bond style. Like Pierce Brosnon, I brought certain style and suaveness to my role.

Different getups and looks

I sport about 8 different get ups. I can’t call them get ups but looks of the same character interlinked with main plot. For the getup of COCK, I observed the way Chicken behaves for almost 10 days. There is also a fight sequence on this getup. In one of sequence, I come as woman and for this getup, I tried to underplay the histrionics. Generally actors who play lady roles tend to go overboard in actions but we chose subtle expressions. We meticulously chosen each getup and designed expressions accordingly.

Costumes and Locales

For the first time, an Indian film was shot in Mexico extensively. We shot the movie in most exotic and virgin locales. Even for costumes, we did our research correctly. The headgear that I wear is brought down from Italy and it was specially designed for us. Other costumes are brought from Thailand, New York, Singapore and Italy.

On Turning as Singer..

The reason for singing all the four songs in Tamil and Telugu is again for creating something different. It was Devi Sri Prasad and director Susi Ganeshan’s idea to make me sing as they wanted to make the music sound novel. Like in a recent Hollywood film where all the actors themselves sung songs for the movie, Devi and Susi wanted to create the same magic here. After singing the songs in Tamil, I went to shooting for Manirathnam’s Raavan. Few days later Devi called on me to come down to Chennai to sing for Telugu version, but I said no. I was hesitant because my Telugu would not be that perfect when I sing. But he insisted, so I learnt the meaning and the right pronunciation of each word before I rendered for it.

Response..

Response for music is really awesome. In Tamil, the songs are super hit. In Telugu too, they are catching up.

Release date..

We are planning to release it in July.

Reason for gap

I prefer to do films with complete devotion. I don’t mind gap between my films. I prefer to make quality films than dishing out more flicks frequently. After Majaa, none of my movies released in Andhra Pradesh, yet, Mallanna was sold for more than Rs 3 Crores for satellite rights. So I don’t believe people care about such things like gaps and delays.
