Sitting in controlled temperatures for long hours with the only air coming form uncleaned and ill-maintained Air conditioner vents, thousands of IT professionals in the city are exposing themselves to substantially higher levels of risk of being infected by the dreaded H1N1 virus. After the 2007-08 meltdown, the corporate services departments of many of these IT firms have been pruned and very few of them look into "non-productive" and cost-incurring items like maintaining hygiene in AC ducts! The result is infections spread very easily in such environments. Also IT firms are places that are home to a lot of people who travel to and fro from different continents and thereby they too carry the risk of acquiring the infection during their stay overseas. But all these concerns notwithstanding, not many IT firms are addressing the issue in any concrete manner. They are restricting themselves to the mandatory posters in cubicles and occasional mail about preventive medicines. It is worthwhile mentioning that not one firm in the city has even made arrangements for sale and distribution of masks.
