Hyderabad, Jan. 4: The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, defended his action of accepting the resignations of two of his Cabinet ministers. He said this was necessary to send a "strong message" to those who were overconfident and became complacent in developing their local areas ahead of the ensuing general elections.
Dr Reddy said this while talking to newsmen at his camp office on Sunday evening. He added that the bypoll results could not be construed as a drubbing for the ruling party as it captured majority of the MPTCs and three ZPTCs. "I have been cautioning my Cabinet colleagues and partymen about being over-confident and complacent. What is wrong if someone owns up responsibility for the debacle and resigns? Both these places were under these ministers," Dr Reddy said.
"Regardless of the stature of the leaders, there has to be accountability somewhere. Otherwise it will be difficult to bring about order among the party activists," he observed. The Chief Minister revealed that the minister Mr Maganti Venkateswara Rao offered to resign owning up moral responsibility for the defeat when he called him. "I advised him to quit. In fact I wanted him to tender his resignation," the Chief Minister said.
Dr Reddy dismissed suggestions that the bypoll results will affect the chances of Congress regaining power in the state. He said that he was confident about a Congress victory regardless of the grand alliance being proposed by the Opposition parties. "Why should we worry about other alliances when we are sure to get 51 per cent of the vote share. We are not bothered who is going to get the remaining 49 per cent of vote," he said.
