The president of the Praja Rajyam Party Chiranjeevi has approached the High court over the issue of a reserved symbol. The election commission has communicated to the PRP that the party does not qualify for a reserved symbol as it has to get a certain percentage of votes polled for this.
The PRP will contest the polls for the first time in the ensuing elections. Not getting a reserved symbol means a huge setback for Chiranjeevi as his candidates will have to contest elections more or less like independents with candidates getting a different symbol at different places.
The General Secretary of the PRP Allu Aravind has filed a petition in the High court seeking a reserved symbol. The PRP wants ‘Rail Engine’ as its symbol. The party claims that it qualifies for a reserved symbol and quoted that the party has 50 lakh registered members
