US-bound students fear for their safety

The inevitable has happened. Students from the state are now hesitating to go to US for their further studies. The death of R. Sudhir Kumar in Atlanta seems to have acted as a tipping point of sorts. Educational consultants in the city have reported a 45% drop in inquiries and a 30% drop in enrolments. Even though the fears of recession and resultant lack of scholarships have been cited as reasons, consultants say that parents are also asking them about safety measures that colleges are having in place. Vindhyavalli of Eagle consulting says “unfortunately we do not have any such assurances from any university in the US. Frankly our understanding of the US civil and police laws needs a lot of improvement.” It is the randomness of the killings that is shocking the parents who think of sending their children to the US. Sudhir Kumar as per emerging reports had about 7 US$ in his pocket at the time he was shot. Many people here are shocked that people can shoot another person for a sum as low as that.
